Spiritual Discernment

Spiritual discernment, as explored through the lens of Proverbs 2:1-11, is a profound concept that intertwines the human quest for wisdom with divine guidance. This essay delves into the nature of spiritual discernment, its biblical foundations, and its application in the life of a believer, primarily focusing on the text of Proverbs 2:1-11 and supporting scripture.

Spiritual discernment refers to the ability to understand and judge matters from a spiritual perspective. It is an essential aspect of Christian life, aiding believers in making life's decisions aligned with God's will. This skill is not innate but cultivated through a relationship with God and an understanding of His word.

Proverbs 2:1-11 (ESV) offers profound insights into acquiring wisdom and understanding. The passage begins with a call to value wisdom and understanding, likened to a treasure hunt (vv. 1-4). The outcome of this pursuit is a deeper reverence for the Lord and a comprehension of the knowledge of God (vv. 5-6). This wisdom is not merely human insight but divine in origin, coming from the mouth of God (v. 6).

"1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; 10 for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you,Proverbs 2:1-11 (ESV)

The passage underscores that wisdom and discernment are gifts from God available to those who earnestly seek them. This divine wisdom enables believers to distinguish between right and wrong, make godly decisions, and understand God's will.

The Biblical foundation of spiritual discernment runs throughout the Bible, starting in the Old Testament. Proverbs 1:7, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction," tells us that fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom and discernment. In this verse, the word "fear" can better be described as reverence or respect for.  The fear of the Lord is a theme that recurs throughout Proverbs, emphasizing its importance in daily life.

In Psalm 32:8, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you." The Psalmist acknowledges God's role in providing direction and understanding.

The New Testament gives us insights into the Holy Spirit's Role. In John 16:13, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to guide believers into all truth. "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come,John 16:13 (ESV).

In discerning God's will, Paul emphasizes in Romans 12:2 that transformation into the image of Jesus Christ, i.e. discipleship and renewal of mind, is key to discerning God’s will. "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect,Romans 12:2 (ESV).

Spiritual discernment is crucial in decision-making in life. It involves prayer, seeking God's will through His Word, and being sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

This raises the question about how do I distinguish between God's voice and personal desires. Discerning between divine guidance and personal desires requires an intimate relationship with God, knowledge of His Word (scripture), and an understanding of one's own heart and motives. Hint: your heart is deceitful, as we discussed earlier.

"9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 "I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." Jeremiah 17:9-10 (ESV).

What we need is a discerning spirit. With it, we make wise choices and take advantage of opportunities for blessings. Dr. Stanley explains why we need spiritual discernment and how to develop it. He shares how to understand truthfully what God is saying to you, separate truth and error, avoid being deceived by sin, differentiate between what’s good and what’s best, distinguish between legalism and liberty, recognize when God’s speaking to you, and give godly counsel.

Spiritual discernment, as explained in Proverbs 2:1-11, is a vital aspect of Christian living. It involves earnestly seeking God's wisdom, which is generously given to those who ask. This wisdom enables believers to navigate life's complexities, make decisions aligned with God's will, and grow in their spiritual journey.
